Typography is a crucial element in any design that includes text. Knowing how to utilize the negative space and kerning will play a large role in the overall look and feel of the design. Proper placement and a good sense of which type style to choose will work wonders on your design also. The lack of any typography awareness is extremely evident in amateur works such as the example to the left. Typography even exists within typefaces themselves. 

One of the greatest examples of this is a font we like to call. Helvetica. Much easier to say than its original name of Neue Haas Grotesk. It was invented in Switzerland in 1957 by a swiss typeface designer named Max Miedinger. Many have attempted to improve upon the original design, and create new typefaces that would have the same impact on our world today. However, most designers agree that Helvetica is already perfect the way it is. It can be seen all over the world. You may not even realize it, but typography is probably surrounding you right now.
